On the morning of April 17, 2019, the former president of Peru, Alan García, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head to avoid facing justice on charges of corruption and belonging to an international criminal organization. He was 69 years old.
Peru’s ex-president was taken to the Emergency Hospital José Casimiro Ulloa to undergo surgery, but succumbed to the wounds.
According to the local reports, García took his life inside his bedroom in Miraflores after learning of the preliminary detention order ordered by the Prosecutor’s Office.
During a press conference, the Minister of Health representative Zulema Tomás indicated that Alan García suffered three cardiorespiratory arrests and massive cerebral hemorrhage. Subsequently, it was confirmed that nothing could be done: the former president had died.
García was president of Peru between 1985-90 and 2006-2011.
